08-23-08 Engine House Foundation

Now that the engine house is constructed, I could build its foundation.

First, I had to do a little demolition. I removed the section between the depot and the road crossing. This was originally constructed using Sculptamold with a ground foam cover. I removed the paper top off the parking lot and depot foundation. I originally glued white paper to the cardboard and painted that a concrete color. That always proved to be troublesome. I decided try a different technique this time.

I built up the engine house foundation and parking lot out of layers of the same cardboard I used to build the mountain ridge. I constructed a one lane road to connect the parking lot to the original road. This road breaks where the modules join.

I added two sidewalks on either side of where the depot will sit. I also added a sidewalk leading from the backdoor of the depot to the engine house parking lot. I painted all the surfaces that I wanted to be concrete white.

I then painted the surfaces a transparent light gray color. I followed that with a transparent concrete color. After that dried, I scribed in concrete seam marks using a pick. I dirtied the concrete by first rubbing a paper towel against a black pastel chalk and then rubbing the paper towel on the concrete surfaces. Next, I will need to fill in the remaining areas with Sculptamold.
